Do you feel safe at home?

Does your partner ever...
  • Put you down, humiliate you, or call you names?
  • Drive recklessly to scare you?
  • Frighten you with threats of violence or throw things when angry?
  • Hit or kick you and then blame you for it?
  • Promise you it won’t happen again... but it does?
Safety at home - When abusive partner is there:
  • Stay out of rooms with no exit
  • Avoid rooms that may have weapons
  • Select a code word that alerts friends and children to call the police
  • Leave a suitcase and checklist items with a friend
  • Stay near a phone
  • Protect your children
When abusive partner has moved out:
  • Obtain an Order of Protection
  • Change locks on doors and windows
  • Insert a peephole in the door
  • Change telephone number, screen calls and block caller ID
  • Get a 911 cell phone
  • Install/Increase outside lighting
  • Inform landlord or neighbor of situation and ask that police be called if abusive partner is seen around the house
Safety at work:
  • Tell your employer
  • Give security a photo of abusive partner and a copy of Order of Protection
  • Screen your calls
  • Have an escort to your bus or car
  • Vary your route home
  • Carry a noisemaker or personal alarm
  • Plan and rehearse an escape route with your children
  • If it is safe, teach them a code word to call 911 and how to use a public phone
  • Let school personnel know to whom children can be released
